St John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic parish church on Melville Street, north of central Perth. Belonging to the Diocese of Dunkeld, it ministers to central and northern Perth and to rural communities beyond the city’s northern and eastern edges. The parish also encompasses St Mary Magdalene’s Church on Glenearn Road. The church remains in use and is protected as a Category C listed building.
Completed in 1832, the building was enlarged and altered several times during the 19th century. In 1848, a high altar was installed and a sacristy constructed. Eight years later, the church was extended by 37 feet, or 11 metres, when a window with decorative tracery was also added. Further work followed in 1892 under Andrew Heiton, including raising the roof above the earlier section and finishing the apse.
