About Upton Chapel
Upton Chapel stands beside Upton Castle, near Cosheston in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Dedicated to St Giles, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. The modest church contains memorials connected with several families from the surrounding area.
The church is thought to date from either the twelfth or thirteenth century and has a compact nave and chancel. Its walls are built of locally sourced rubble masonry, while slate covers the roofs, which have tiled ridges. A bellcote rises over the western end. Inside are a small piscina, a pulpit from the Jacobean period and medieval effigies of the Malefant family. One represents William Malefant, who died in 1362, dressed in chain mail, while another portrays a female relative. The castle’s owner arranged an interior restoration in 1978.
