About Manordeifi Old Church
Manordeifi Old Church is a former Church of England parish church at Carreg-Wen in Pembrokeshire, close to the River Teifi. Now closed to regular services, it is cared for by the Friends of Friendless Churches and is Grade II* listed. Flooding once left congregants unable to leave, so a coracle was stored in the porch to carry them across the water. A coracle remains there today.
Christian worship may have begun on the site during the sixth or seventh century. The nave and chancel were built in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, with the porch following later. Repairs took place during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, after the building ceased to serve as the parish church in 1899. Built of stone beneath slate roofing, it has a western porch, north vestry and single bellcote. Inside are box pews, two incorporating fireplaces, a thirteenth-century font and a fifteenth-century bell. Memorials include those to poet John Blackwell and Charles Colby, who died in India in 1852.
