About All Saints Church, Shirburn
All Saints Church, Shirburn stands at the western edge of Shirburn in Oxfordshire, close to Shirburn Castle. Formerly the Church of England parish church, it became redundant in 1995 and is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. The building is protected at Grade II, while its northern chapel serves as a mausoleum for the Parker family, Earls of Macclesfield.
Originating in the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the church was enlarged during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Thomas Henry Wyatt restored and substantially reconstructed it in 1876. Its cross-shaped plan includes aisles, transepts, a chancel, south porch and western tower, with rendered chalk and flint masonry, tiled roofs and a brick northern transept. Surviving details include Norman carved stonework, medieval arcades, a thirteenth-century font, a fourteenth-century piscina and family memorials. Ward and Hughes created the eastern stained glass, and Gray and Davison supplied the organ during the 1880s.
