About St Mary's Church, Pyrton
St Mary’s Church, Pyrton serves the Church of England community in this Oxfordshire village. It remains an active parish church within the Icknield benefice and is designated Grade II*, recognising its considerable historic and architectural interest.
A church existed at Pyrton by 887, while parts of the present structure originate in the 12th century. John Chessell Buckler substantially reconstructed the nave and chancel in 1854, retaining the earlier layout and several Norman elements, including the southern doorway and chancel arch. Built of dressed and knapped flint with limestone detailing, the church has a tiled roof, a three-bay nave, chancel, vestry, southern porch and western bell-cote. Notable furnishings include a 12th-century font, medieval floor tiles, an oak pulpit dated 1636 and Victorian stained glass. A medieval Purbeck marble memorial lies near the altar, while three bells include two cast in 1605 and 1606.
