Wesley Memorial Church is a Methodist place of worship on New Inn Hall Street in central Oxford. This Grade II listed church remains in use for Christian worship and also provides a setting for a range of social activities.
The congregation dates from 1783, the year John Wesley preached at Oxford’s first Methodist meeting house nearby. A chapel designed by William Jenkins opened on the street in 1818, before the congregation transferred to the present building in 1878. Designed by Charles Bell and built by Joshua Symm, the church is Gothic Revival in style, drawing particularly on Decorated Gothic architecture. Its distinctive details include column capitals carved by Henry Frith of Gloucester, each depicting one of twelve varieties of English plant. The earlier chapel remained in educational use until its sale to St Peter’s College during the 1930s and was demolished in 1969.
