About The Oxford Oratory
The Oxford Oratory is an active Roman Catholic parish serving central Oxford. Standing at 25 Woodstock Road beside Somerville College, it is cared for by the Congregation of the Oratory and is protected as a Grade II listed building. Mass is celebrated mainly in English, with Latin also used for sung and traditional services on Sundays and holy days.
Founded as a Jesuit parish, the church was financed by a £7,000 gift from the Catholic convert Baroness Weld and completed in 1875. Joseph Hansom conceived the building in the Gothic Revival tradition, with one nave and five side chapels. The Jesuits departed during the 1980s, and an independent Oratorian congregation was established in 1993. Alterations in the 1970s included covering much of the decoration and repositioning the altar. Later restoration has recovered two murals by Gabriel Pippet, while the organ was expanded by Matthew Copley between 1998 and 2004.
