About St Peter-in-the-East, Oxford

St Peter-in-the-East, Oxford, occupies a site on Queen’s Lane in central Oxford. The Grade I-listed building is no longer consecrated for worship, having shut in 1965 before conversion during the 1970s. It now accommodates St Edmund Hall’s library. Its former burial ground, on the northern side, has become a garden featuring a bronze figure of St Edmund as a student in poverty.

The site had a church by the late tenth century, and an eleventh-century stone successor was recorded in Domesday. Dating to around 1140, the surviving Norman structure began with a nave, chancel and crypt. A northern aisle and the Lady Chapel followed during the thirteenth century. The tower and the majority of the windows date to the fourteenth century. Medieval glazing survives in the Lady Chapel, while a compact chapel honouring St Catharine and St Thomas was created in the early sixteenth century.
