About Merton College Chapel
Merton College Chapel is the place of worship for Merton College in Oxford, Oxfordshire. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist, it also served the local parish until 1891. The church is valued for its acoustic qualities and has supported a choral foundation since 2008.
Construction on the present building started around 1290 after its predecessor became dilapidated. By 1294, the choir and its imposing eastern window had been completed. The architecture shows Gothic design developing beyond the formal geometry associated with the Early English style. Twelve windows along the choir walls contain medieval glazing given by Henry Mansfield, while the east window preserves a thirteenth-century depiction of the Annunciation. The southern transept dates from the fourteenth century, the northern one from the following century, and the tower was completed in 1450. Following a roof collapse in 1655, repairs included Christopher Wren’s classical screen and carved seating.
