About City Church
City Church is the civic church of Oxford, Oxfordshire, where the city’s mayor and local government representatives traditionally attend worship. Since 1971, this role has belonged to St Michael at the North Gate on Cornmarket, which remains the present holder of the designation.
The civic association dates from about 1122 and has passed between three Oxford churches. St Martin’s at Carfax held the position from around 1122 until 1896, when the building was demolished but its tower was retained. All Saints on the High Street then served in this capacity until 1971. It was later deconsecrated and now houses Lincoln College’s library. The title subsequently transferred to St Michael at the North Gate.
