About Chapel of St Mary at Smith Gate
The Chapel of St Mary at Smith Gate is an octagonal former place of worship in Oxford, Oxfordshire. Standing on Catte Street across from the Clarendon Building, it now forms part of Hertford College’s New Quad. The Grade II listed building serves as the college’s Middle Common Room for graduate students, with a kitchen beneath.
A chapel was present by the later 14th century, beside the city wall and incorporated into the fortifications at Smith Gate. Before debates in the Divinity School, students came here to pray. Rebuilt in 1520, it fell out of religious use in 1537, when its images and reredos were transferred to St Peter-in-the-East. The structure later became a house and then accommodated shops, including the Holywell Press. Hertford College acquired it in 1923, restored it and incorporated it into the quadrangle linked to the older college buildings by the Bridge of Sighs.
