About Eynhallow Church
Eynhallow Church is a ruined medieval church on the uninhabited island of Eynhallow, near Evie in Orkney. Standing on the island’s south-western slope between Rousay and the Orkney Mainland, it is protected as a scheduled monument, a status first granted in 1921.
Built in the 12th century, possibly in 1101, the church may originally have formed part of a monastery, perhaps Benedictine. The roofless structure is about 21 metres long and 7 metres wide, with a rectangular nave, a western porch and an eastern chancel with a straight end. Surviving elements include the porch walls, the nave gables and the chancel foundations, while a tower may once have stood above the porch. Carved pieces of red sandstone have also been discovered nearby. After its religious use ended, the building was altered for domestic occupation from the 16th century.
