About Holy Rood Church, Ossington
Holy Rood Church in Ossington, Nottinghamshire, serves as a Church of England parish church. Dating from the late eighteenth century, it is protected at Grade I for its exceptional architectural and historical significance. The church belongs to a group of parishes that also includes Caunton, Cromwell and Norwell.
John Carr of York designed the church, which was constructed between 1782 and 1783. It may occupy, or lie close to, the former location of Ossington Preceptory, a Knights Hospitaller monastery dissolved in 1534 during Henry VIII’s suppression of the monasteries. A notable feature is a Robson barrel organ made around 1830. The British Institute of Organ Studies has granted the instrument a Grade I Historic Organ Certificate.
