About Tennyson Street Methodist Church, Nottingham
Tennyson Street Methodist Church, Nottingham, stood at the corner of Tennyson Street and Larkdale Street in Radford, Nottingham. It served as a Methodist place of worship from 1874 to 1941, when Nottingham Education Committee bought the premises for use by Windley School as a gymnasium and youth centre.
Members of Halifax Place Wesleyan Chapel established the church to serve Radford’s increasing population. Its foundation stones were set in place in June 1873, and worship began there in September 1874. Designed by Nottingham architect John Collyer in a modern Italian style, the building combined rough-faced Bulwell stone at the lower level with pressed brick and Hollington stone detailing above. The chapel seated 1,000 people, including 200 in a gallery, while rooms beneath included a schoolroom and band room. After the 1941 sale, its fittings were dispersed and its Conacher pipe organ went to Cotmanhay Methodist Church.
