About St John the Evangelist's Catholic Church, Nottingham

St John the Evangelist's Catholic Church, Nottingham, stands in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Dating from 1827, it was the first Roman Catholic church in the city to be built expressly for worship after the Reformation. The Grade II listed building is no longer used as a church and now contains offices.

Catholics in Nottingham had worshipped in a chapel from 1790, and the congregation grew to about 150 after Father Robert William Willson arrived. He planned a larger chapel, designed by his brother, Edward James Willson, on George Street. Built in a Venetian Gothic style, it has red-brick walls, a dressed-stone façade and a slate-covered roof. Its original dimensions were 84 feet by 41 feet, with a height of 31 feet. A separately listed presbytery, also designed by Willson in 1827, adjoins the building. The church obtained its pipe organ from London maker George Parsons and was superseded by Nottingham Cathedral in 1850.
