About St Ann's Well Road Congregational Church
St Ann's Well Road Congregational Church was a former place of Congregational worship in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Situated where St Ann's Well Road meets Alfred Street, it ceased operating in 1970. Its members then joined the Congregational community at Castle Gate. The building no longer survives, having been removed as part of later regeneration in the St Ann's district.
The congregation originated as an offshoot of the Castle Gate centre. Richard Charles Sutton prepared the design, while the construction work was undertaken by Mr Wright, whose business was on Portland Road. The £1,600 building provided room for 500 worshippers and was formally opened on 16 March 1870. From 1946, the church was also home to the Stanwell Players. This theatrical group staged its first play in January 1947 and directed proceeds towards charities, beginning with the London Missionary Society. Following the church’s closure, the company transferred to Castle Gate before moving again in 1975, and eventually disbanded in 1991.
