About Parliament Street Methodist Church
Parliament Street Methodist Church is a Methodist place of worship in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. It stands on Parliament Street and occupies the site used by the congregation since the early nineteenth century. The present church dates from 1875.
The congregation developed from New Connexion Methodists who had worshipped at a Hockley chapel following their separation from the Wesleyans in 1797. A chapel seating 500 opened on the present site in 1817, with a gallery added in 1826 to double its capacity. Alderman W. Foster placed the foundation stone for the current building in August 1874. Designed by Richard Charles Sutton and constructed by Mr Mayball of Lenton, it opened in May 1875. Abraham Harrison Goodall oversaw renovations in 1892. Bodill and Sons carried out further refurbishment and internal reorganisation in 1989, supervised by G. Birkett, when the congregation joined with that of Nottingham’s Albert Hall. The church also contains a Conacher pipe organ installed during its construction.
