About Greek Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary Eleousa
The Greek Orthodox Church of the Virgin Mary Eleousa is an active place of Orthodox worship at 184 Derby Road, Nottingham. Services take place each Sunday, supporting local Greek and Cypriot communities, students and Orthodox residents of the city. The Grade II listed church has an attached hall that accommodates a Greek school and community observances linked to Christmas, Easter, saints’ commemorations and the Orthodox religious calendar.
Its origins lie with an independent congregation founded in the early 1800s, initially meeting at St James’ Church, Standard Hill. Growth prompted the group to commission its own building, originally known as Park Hill Congregational Church. Construction commenced with a foundation ceremony in June 1882, followed by the first services in June 1883. Leicester architects James Tait and John Langham prepared the design. A Bishop and Son pipe organ, installed in 1884, underwent reconstruction by Roger Yates in 1934. Marcel Dupré played at its return to use on 22 October of that year.
