About George Street Particular Baptist Church
George Street Particular Baptist Church is a former Baptist place of worship in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. The congregation occupied the building from its opening in 1815 until 1948. No longer an active church, it is now home to Nottingham Arts Theatre.
The congregation originated at Friar Lane Baptist Church and moved after exceeding the capacity of its earlier premises. Architect Edward Staveley designed the George Street building with accommodation for 1,000 worshippers. In 1847, a division led some members to establish Derby Road Particular Baptist Church. That year, it also became Nottingham’s earliest Baptist congregation to acquire an organ, supplied by the London firm Bevington & Sons for £220. The church additionally helped form Cross Street Baptist Church in Arnold. In 1948, A. H. Betts remodelled the building for use as the Co-operative Theatre.
