About Cleaves Congregational Centre
Cleaves Congregational Centre stands at 6 Castle Gate in Nottingham. Affiliated with the Congregational Churches, it occupies a Grade II listed building with roots in a congregation established during the 1650s.
A meeting house was founded on Castle Gate in 1689 following the Toleration Act. Richard Charles Sutton designed the current church, which was built in 1863 and began holding services the following year. The congregation became part of the United Reformed Church in 1972, merging with St Andrew’s in Goldsmith Street three years later. The Congregational Federation bought the premises back in 1980. The present organ dates from 1903 and was made by James Jepson Binns for Councillor George E. Franklin’s Derby home before being acquired by the church in 1909.
