About Broad Street Baptist Church
Broad Street Baptist Church, in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, was a General Baptist chapel completed in 1818. It ceased serving its original congregation in 1901, following union with the General Baptist chapel on Milton Street, subsequently called Mansfield Road Baptist Church. Today, the former chapel houses a Revolution bar, and the neighbouring school premises are used as the Muse bar.
The congregation originated in 1817, when Robert Smith and a group of worshippers separated from the Baptist community in Stoney Street. Their Broad Street chapel opened the next year, with facilities for Sunday teaching added nearby soon afterwards. Members also assisted other Baptist congregations, giving financial help towards Daybrook Baptist Church in 1859. Musical accompaniment progressed from strings to a harmonium, acquired in 1857, and then to an organ built by the Nottingham firm Lloyd and Dudgeon in 1869. Hedley John Price adapted the chapel for use as a lace warehouse in 1903.
