About Church of the Holy Trinity, Embleton
The Church of the Holy Trinity, Embleton is a Church of England church in Rennington, Northumberland. Dating from around 1101, it is recognised as a Grade I listed building. Although now dedicated to the Holy Trinity, historical records also refer to it as St Mary’s.
Remains of the earliest stone building survive in the lower tower, while the present cross-shaped plan includes a nave with two aisles, a clerestory, chancel, porch and chantry chapel. Much of the medieval work dates from about 1330–40, including the clerestory and upper parts of the tower. An uncommon pierced parapet is among its distinctive external features. John Dobson restored the building in 1850 and added the Falloden aisle, while F. R. Wilson rebuilt the chancel in 1867. The church also contains stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe, a window marking Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, and memorials associated with the Grey and Craster families.
