St Mary’s RC Church is an active Roman Catholic parish church on Battle Hill in Hexham, near the town centre and facing Hexham Park. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Sunday Mass is celebrated at 10:30 am.
Built between 1828 and 1830, the church was designed in the Gothic Revival tradition by Fr Michael Singleton. Its foundation stone was placed on 22 April 1828, although construction was delayed when the bellcote at the eastern gable collapsed. Bishop Thomas Penswick opened the completed church on 22 September 1830. The parish had developed from two earlier Catholic missions, which united in 1827 to establish the new building. After the roof collapsed in 1914, further significant work took place in 1979, when Jack Lynn oversaw refurbishment and changes to the sanctuary. Bishop Hugh Lindsay reopened the church that December.
