About Hexham Abbey
Hexham Abbey is a Church of England parish church on Beaumont Street in Hexham, Northumberland. Dedicated to St Andrew, it has served the town as its parish church since the monastic community was dissolved in 1537. The church is protected as a scheduled monument and was designated Grade I in 1951. Its former monastic buildings now house an exhibition and visitor centre devoted to its past.
A church was founded here by St Wilfrid around 674, using stone recovered from neighbouring Roman sites. The surviving Saxon crypt contains Roman masonry, including carved and inscribed stones. After destruction by Danish forces in 875, the building was reconstructed during the 11th century. An Augustinian priory followed in 1113, while much of the present Early English structure was created between about 1170 and 1250. The east end was renewed in 1858, and extensive work from 1898 to 1919 included rebuilding the nave and restoring the choir. Stained glass by Henry Thomas Bosdet was installed between about 1907 and 1918.
