About St John the Baptist, Edlingham

St John the Baptist, Edlingham is a Church of England church in the Northumberland village of Edlingham. Dating from the mediaeval period, it is recognised for its architectural and historic importance with Grade I listed status. The church stands beside Edlingham Castle, which originated in the 13th century and gained further battlements and defensive works during the 16th century.

Most of the building is Norman, with work spanning two principal phases. The chancel arch and southern porch date from the late 11th or early 12th century, while the northern aisle arcade was added towards the end of the 12th century. The porch is distinguished by an unusual barrel-like Norman vault. Within the arcade, round pillars support scallop-shaped capitals decorated with nail-head bands. The fortified western tower may have been started in the later 12th century and completed subsequently.
