The Catholic Church of Our Lady and Saint Cuthbert is an active Roman Catholic parish church at 64 Ravensdowne, near the centre of Berwick-upon-Tweed and south of Berwick Barracks. Set back discreetly from the road, it holds Grade II listed status. The parish is served by a Carmelite priest and is partnered with Catholic churches in Seahouses and on Lindisfarne.
Catholic worship in the area was supported by Jesuits after the Reformation. French priests fleeing revolutionary France established a chapel in Berwick in 1799, before Benedictines succeeded them in 1810. With support from the Haggerston baronets, the Benedictines acquired the present site and built the church in Gothic Revival style. It opened on 25 June 1829 with room for 300 people. An enlargement during the 1880s doubled its size and added the present chancel and north window. A painting of Christ’s agony, once given to local resident James Grieve by King Charles X of France, arrived in 1852.
