About St Aidan's Church, Bamburgh
St Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh is a Church of England parish church in Bamburgh, Northumberland, within the Diocese of Newcastle. This Grade I listed building continues the village parish role it assumed following the Reformation.
Bede records that Aidan established a timber church at this location in 635, beyond Bamburgh Castle’s walls, and died there in 652. A beam kept inside is traditionally associated with his death. Most of the present structure is from the later 12th century, although earlier masonry remains in the north aisle. The 60-foot chancel was added around 1230 and contains a Caen stone reredos designed by W. S. Hicks in 1895. After periods of neglect, the building underwent several repairs, including substantial 19th-century restoration. Memorials include a medieval knight’s effigy and an 1844 sculpture of Grace Darling. The crypt houses 110 people from the seventh and eighth centuries whose remains were transferred there in 2016.
