About St Michael and All Angels' Church, Thornton
St Michael and All Angels’ Church stands at Thornton in Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, near Thornton Hall and east of the River Ouse. Formerly an Anglican parish church, it is now redundant and cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church was established here in 1219, while the present structure originated in the early 14th century. Built from coursed rubble stone beneath lead roofing, it has a four-bay nave, two aisles and a three-stage western tower with gargoyles, battlements and a key-shaped iron weathervane. Extensive alterations between 1780 and 1800 included rebuilding the north aisle, blocking the chancel arch, lowering the ceiling and adding a gallery. Notable furnishings and monuments include box pews, medieval alabaster effigies and Robert Ingylton’s reconstructed tomb chest with its large memorial brass. The church also contains Victorian stained glass, two harmoniums and three bells, the earliest dating from around 1315, though they cannot now be rung.
