About St James the Less
St James the Less is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in Banbury, Northamptonshire. The building is protected at Grade II* and largely reflects work undertaken during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
A church existed locally in Anglo-Saxon times, though the present site was established in the thirteenth century. Its west tower incorporates an older triangular doorway, possibly from the tenth century, alongside Early English Gothic openings. After the medieval spire fell, repairs used fine stone brought from Helmdon. The fourteenth-century south aisle retains Decorated Gothic windows, while its arcade is later Perpendicular work. Changes in 1840 included raising the nave walls and adding galleries; these were removed during restoration in 1885, when a north aisle was constructed and the oak roof reinstated. Notable features include sixteenth-century Washington family heraldic glass, their seventeenth-century pew, an ancient oak chest and surviving brasses from the family tomb.
