About St Peter's Church, Wintringham
St Peter’s Church stands in Wintringham, North Yorkshire. This former Anglican place of worship is now redundant, is protected as a Grade I listed building and has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 2004.
The Norman chancel was built during the 12th century, while most of the present structure belongs to the 14th century. In the following century, the eastern end was reconstructed and new nave windows were installed. Local calcareous sandstone and Westmorland slate form the principal materials. The layout includes an aisled four-bay nave, a three-bay chancel and a western tower crowned by a recessed octagonal spire. The tower was repaired in 1818, the roofs in 1887, and Temple Moore introduced oak chancel furnishings between 1889 and 1891. Surviving details include medieval and later wall paintings, 15th-century stained glass showing saints, carved chapel screens, a 17th-century pulpit and lectern, and a Norman-style font with a painted cover dated 1736.
