About Church of St Leonard

The Church of St Leonard is the Church of England parish church serving Welbury in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1970.

Probably founded during the 12th century, the church was substantially reconstructed in 1815. William Searle Hicks rebuilt the chancel in 1877, and little medieval fabric now survives. The building is constructed from stone and roofed with slate. Its plan comprises a nave, a gabled porch on the south side, a lower chancel and a vestry to the north. A two-bell bellcote rises at the western end, featuring ogee-shaped openings and a battlemented pediment. The porch doorway has a pointed arch, chamfered stonework and a hood mould, with a sundial positioned above. Inside, reset stones dating from the 12th century retain distinctive zigzag decoration.
