About Church of St Mary, Wath

The Church of St Mary, Wath is the Church of England parish church for Wath, close to Ripon in North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has been protected at Grade II* since 1955.

Originating in the thirteenth century, the church is constructed from stone and cobblework. Its plan incorporates a nave, chancel, southern transept, organ chamber, northern vestry and tower at the west end. The vestry was introduced during the fifteenth century. Changes made in 1629 included reducing the roof height and taking out the chancel and transept arches. The five-tier tower followed in 1812, with restoration carried out in 1873 and further roof renewal during the twentieth century. Medieval furnishings include piscinas, a set of three clergy seats, brass memorials and a wooden chest from the fourteenth century. Early cross fragments are built into the organ chamber’s northern wall. A porch combining glass and stone was installed in 2026, improving access and conserving heat.
