About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Sowerby, North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, a status granted in 1984.
A chapel associated with the church was documented by the time of the Domesday survey and again during the 14th century. The building was completely reconstructed in 1862 to plans by Edward Buckton Lamb. Built in stone and roofed with slate, it has a cross-shaped layout with short transepts, a broad crossing, a compact chancel and a south porch. Above the crossing is a pyramid-shaped roof supporting a small turret and slender spire. Inside, the elaborate timber roof is especially intricate around the crossing, where small quatrefoil openings occupy the corners. Many windows have three lights with trefoil heads beneath pointed arches, while the nave windows use flat arches.
