About Church of St Wilfrid
The Church of St Wilfrid serves a Roman Catholic parish in Ripon, North Yorkshire. Situated at the junction of Coltsgate Hill and Trinity Lane, it lies just beyond the city centre to the north. The church remains in use for regular weekend Masses and is protected at Grade II*.
Work commenced in 1860 after Thomas Bradwell secured the site on behalf of Fr Garstang, whose earlier efforts had encountered local resistance. Joseph Hansom devised the Gothic Revival scheme, incorporating worship space, a school and accommodation for the priest. Canon Vavasour and his family met the £5,000 cost, and four bishops attended the opening in April 1862. E. W. Pugin was responsible for the reredos. A Lady chapel, financed by the Marquess of Ripon, followed in 1874, and furnishings from St Mary’s at Studley Royal were later left to the church.
