About St Joseph & St Francis Xavier
St Joseph & St Francis Xavier serves a Roman Catholic congregation in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Located on Newbiggin, near Victoria Road and south of the town’s cricket ground, it continues in use as a parish church. The building has Grade II listed status and has been cared for by the Diocese of Middlesbrough since the Jesuits transferred responsibility in 1961.
Catholic ministry in Richmond dates to 1794, when the Benedictine Thomas Austin Lawson established a mission for residents. The Jesuits later assumed responsibility, with Robert Johnson serving for five decades before his death in 1865. A stained-glass memorial to him was placed in the building in 1888. When the original chapel proved inadequate for increasing attendance, William Strickland asked George Goldie to plan a larger place of worship. Goldie’s church was finished and opened in 1868. Building it, alongside an adjacent school that later became the parish hall, placed the parish under considerable financial strain.
