About Parish Church of Saint John the Evangelist
The Parish Church of Saint John the Evangelist stands at 61 North Ormesby Road, Middlesbrough, near the meeting of North Ormesby Road, Marton Road and Russell Street. It remains an active Church of England parish church and shares a parish with St Columba’s. As Middlesbrough’s earliest surviving parish church, it has a longstanding place in the town’s life and is used for worship, weddings, community gatherings and celebrations. The building has Grade II* listed status and was added to the statutory register in July 1968.
Completed in 1865, the church was designed by architect John Norton and named for Saint John the Evangelist. Its Early English Gothic design uses red and patterned brickwork with sandstone detailing beneath Welsh slate roofs. The plan includes an aisled nave with a clerestory, transepts, a south porch, an apsidal chancel, a vestry and a chapel. Its north-west tower and spire form a prominent Middlesbrough landmark, visible from the nearby A66.
