About Church of St Michael

The Church of St Michael serves the Anglican parish of Kirklington in Kirklington-cum-Upsland, North Yorkshire. It is a Church of England place of worship and has been protected at Grade I since 1966, reflecting its exceptional historical and architectural significance.

Although associated with a date of 1250, the earliest nave fabric possibly comes from the first decades of the 1100s. The chancel followed roughly a century later, before alterations around 1340 introduced the side aisles. A clerestory and western tower were constructed during the 1400s. Stone walls support roofs covered in Welsh slate, while the tower includes three levels, a clock and a battlemented top with decorative pinnacles. George Fowler Jones oversaw restoration work in 1857 and 1858, adding two porches and vestry accommodation. Inside are remnants of medieval and seventeenth-century coloured glass, carved faces, historic effigies, Christopher Wandesford’s substantial monument, and a nineteenth-century font resting on a medieval base.
