About St John the Baptist church, Kirk Hammerton

St John the Baptist church, Kirk Hammerton is a Church of England parish church in Kirk Hammerton, North Yorkshire. It belongs to the Lower Nidderdale Parish in the Diocese of Leeds and has connections with the village’s Church of England primary school. The building was designated Grade I in 1966.

The church has Anglo-Saxon origins and was first dedicated to St Quentin. Its earliest surviving section, now the Lady Chapel, is thought to date from the ninth century, while the square tower was added around 950 and remains substantially intact. Much of the early fabric uses millstone grit reclaimed from Roman Eboracum. Changes followed around 1150 and in 1834, before H. Fowler of Durham carried out a substantial enlargement in 1892. The interior combines Saxon, Norman, Early English and Victorian work, including Pre-Raphaelite decoration, stained glass by Charles Kempe, a font from Charles II’s reign, timber vaulting and two bells.
