About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Kilburn High and Low, North Yorkshire. Originally associated with the parish of Coxwold, it became the church of a separate parish in 1868. The building has been protected at Grade II* since 1966.
Dating from the 12th century, the church began as a chapel serving Coxwold and was modified during the 13th century. Its western tower was constructed in 1667, while restoration took place in 1818 and again under Ewan Christian in 1869. Built in stone and roofed with Welsh slate, it includes a nave, chancel, northern aisle and chapel, porch, vestry and tower. Notable details include the porch sundial and a Romanesque doorway enriched with chevron carving and ornamented cushion capitals. The interior contains two medieval grave slabs, likely 17th-century pews and a bell dated 1684.
