About Church of St Oswald
The Church of St Oswald is the Church of England parish church serving Horton in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire. Dedicated today to Oswald of Northumbria, it was previously associated with Thomas Becket. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1958, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural importance.
Built around 1150, the church retains its 12th-century nave, while much of the remaining structure dates from the 1400s. Constructed in stone and roofed with lead, it includes two aisles, a chancel flanked by chapels, a southern porch and a tower at the west end. The three-stage tower has angled buttresses, Gothic windows and a battlemented top. Notable Norman features include the doorway and font, both ornamented with chevron patterns. Extensive restoration took place from 1823 to 1825, including reconstruction of the northern aisle. The aisle roofs were reshaped in 1879–80, and the doorway underwent further restoration in 1980.
