About Church of St Andrew
The Church of St Andrew in Grinton, North Yorkshire, is a Church of England parish church within the Diocese of Leeds. Dating from the 12th century and traditionally associated with the year 1150, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. For centuries it served an extensive Upper Swaledale parish, receiving burials brought along the route now called the Swaledale Corpse Road.
Originally connected with Bridlington’s Augustinian priory, the church retains Norman elements alongside Decorated and Perpendicular work added during several later centuries. Its layout includes a western tower, nave, chancel, two aisles, chapels, vestry and southern porch. Notable fittings include a chained Bible, a Norman font, a Jacobean pulpit and its later sounding board, and a viewing opening in the south-west wall. Restoration undertaken in 1895–96 replaced the box pews, preserved much medieval glass and added an eastern window by Charles Eamer Kempe. The bells were recast and a new tower clock installed at the same time.
