About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is the Church of England parish church for Goathland in North Yorkshire. The present building, together with its entrance steps and iron handrail, has held Grade II* listed status since 1969.
Goathland had a hermitage chapel by the 11th or 12th century, while another chapel dedicated to St Mary was documented in 1568. After that building was removed, a replacement opened in 1820. The existing sandstone church, roofed with stone slates, was designed by Walter Brierley and erected from 1894 to 1896. Its architecture combines Perpendicular Gothic forms with Arts and Crafts influences. A central three-stage tower has buttresses, clocks, a stair turret and a weathervane. Inside are a font from about 1100, a likely 12th-century altar stone, a 17th-century pulpit and fittings by Robert Thompson. The stained glass includes early 20th-century work and west windows commemorating the Millennium.
