About Church of Saint Michael and All Angels
The Church of Saint Michael and All Angels is a Church of England church in Downholme, North Yorkshire. Recognised for its architectural and historic importance, it has held Grade II* listed status since 1969.
Built around 1180, the church originally comprised a nave and chancel. A northern aisle followed in about 1200, while the chancel was reconstructed around 1330. The aisle was lengthened to form a chapel on the north side in approximately 1430. Restorations took place in 1811, when the porch was introduced, and later in 1886 and 1894. Constructed from stone beneath an artificial slate covering, the building has a bellcote above its western gable. Its south porch leads to a Norman entrance with shafts and chevron decoration. Inside are an octagonal font dating from the 12th century and a piscina.
