About Danby Wiske Church
Danby Wiske Church is the Church of England parish church serving Danby Wiske, within Danby Wiske with Lazenby in North Yorkshire. Dating from about 1150, it remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1970. Its dedication to a saint is unknown.
Constructed in sandstone and roofed with Welsh and Westmorland slate, the church retains its Norman south entrance and part of the original southern wall. Extensive 14th-century work introduced the chancel and northern aisle, followed by the western tower in the 15th century and the southern porch in the 18th. The tower features angled buttresses, narrow openings in its stair turret and a battlemented top. Three robed figures are carved above the Norman doorway. Inside are an early Norman font, a medieval effigy commemorating Brian Fitz Alan of Bedale’s widow, a 14th-century piscina and aumbry, and stalls incorporating Jacobean woodwork.
