About Church of St Michael
The Church of St Michael serves as the Church of England parish church for Crambe in North Yorkshire. It is recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance, having received Grade I listed status in 1954.
Surviving sections of the nave walls and the arch leading to the chancel originate from the later 11th century. The chancel was reconstructed during the following century, while the nave was extended westwards in the 13th century. A limestone tower was erected at the western end in the 15th century, featuring three stages, an embattled parapet and eight decorated pinnacles. Sandstone and gritstone form the nave and chancel, with some Roman stonework incorporated into the fabric. Restoration undertaken in 1886 and 1887 included the installation of an east window. Interior features include a 12th-century font, an octagonal pulpit and altar rails from the early 1600s, and part of a 10th-century hogback stone set into the southern wall.
