About Church of St Mary the Virgin

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Bentham, North Yorkshire. Recognised for its special architectural and historic interest, it has held Grade II* listed status since 1958.

A place of worship occupied the site in the 1100s, while the surviving western tower was built during the 15th century. Cornelius Sherlock designed the reconstruction of the rest of the church in a Decorated Gothic style, completed in 1887. Built in stone and roofed with slate, it includes an aisled nave and clerestory, a chancel, vestry and southern porch. The three-storey tower has angled buttresses, a clock on its southern face and a battlemented parapet. Inside are traces of painted decoration and a notable cylindrical font from the 12th century, carved with an arcade and fourteen scenes from the Bible. Rediscovered during the 1700s, the font returned to use in 1830 and was placed on its present base in 1858.
