About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is the Church of England parish church serving Arkengarthdale in North Yorkshire. Standing at Langthwaite, it has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1986. The church is also available for overnight ‘champing’ stays through the Churches Conservation Trust.
An earlier medieval church at Arkle Town was demolished during the 1810s after Arkle Beck weakened its foundations. Its successor was financed by George Brown, the local lord of the manor, and finished in 1818. Built from rubble stone beneath a slate roof, it follows an Early English design, with a five-bay nave and chancel, a northern vestry and a three-stage western tower. Inside are a gallery, two fonts, late Victorian pews, and the original pulpit and altar rail. A reredos and plaque were made by Robert Thompson.
