About South Wishaw Parish Church
South Wishaw Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland congregation in Wishaw, North Lanarkshire. It ministers across the town’s southern districts, encompassing Pather, Netherton and the lower portion of the central area, towards the Clyde. It forms part of the Forth Valley and Clydesdale presbytery and is designated a Category C listed building.
The present congregation dates from 2004, when Thornlie Church joined with Chalmers Church and settled at the former Chalmers site in East Academy Street. Completed in 1874 to plans by Alexander Hinshelwood, the yellow sandstone church is Gothic in character. Architectural details include gabled elevations, pointed openings, stepped buttresses and a square tower of three levels topped by a masonry spire. Malcolm Ross designed the adjoining hall, added in 1903. Renovations undertaken across 2012 and 2013 removed the lateral galleries, lower pews and pipe organ. They also created a larger vestibule, installed glazing between it and the worship space, and added an oak floor, movable chairs and audiovisual facilities.
