About Bellshill Central Parish church
Bellshill Central Parish Church is an active Church of Scotland congregation in Bellshill, North Lanarkshire. It serves the town centre together with Mossend, Milnwood and Orbiston, and belongs to Hamilton Presbytery. The present congregation resulted from the joining of MacDonald Memorial Church and Orbiston Church.
The church occupies the former MacDonald Memorial buildings on Main Street. Designed by David Clunas and completed in 1874, the gabled Gothic structure has sandstone boundary walls, pointed windows and a central timber door beneath a large traceried window. Inside are galleries supported by iron columns, wooden pews, extensive stained glass and a panelled organ case. MacDonald Memorial originated as a Free Church mission in 1873, while Orbiston began during post-war housing growth and opened its Busby Road building in 1956. The church also contains a rare 1930 H. Hildson pipe organ with two manuals, pedals and 17 stops. Its mechanism was converted from pneumatic to solid-state electric action during refurbishment in 2015, while its original tonal character was retained.
