About Church of St Withburga
The Church of St Withburga belongs to the Church of England and continues to serve Holkham, near Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. It is also associated with the Holkham Hall estate and occupies a raised site within Holkham Park. Services are held during the summer, and the church has Grade II* listed status.
Its origins may lie in the Saxon or Norman period, although no fabric from that early church survives. The southern foot of the tower dates to the 13th century, while most of the present structure reflects later work. A rebuilding took place in 1767, followed by a substantial restoration directed by James K. Colling from 1868 to 1871. The exterior combines Norfolk flint with dressed limestone. Memorials include graves of the Coke family, a tomb chest for Juliana, Countess of Leicester, and tributes to villagers killed in the two world wars.
